What Is A Brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty, or arm lift surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to address loose, sagging skin and excess fat on the upper arms.  This common issue can be caused by factors such as aging, significant weight loss, or genetics.  Dr. Riccio has successfully performed numerous brachioplasty procedures, helping patients achieve beautifully contoured arms and natural looking results.

How Is A Brachioplasty Performed?

1. Anesthesia: The surgery begins with the administration of anesthesia. Dr. Riccio will discuss with you whether you will receive general anesthesia (where you're asleep) or local anesthesia with sedation (where you're relaxed but awake) based on your specific needs and the extent of the procedure.

2. Incision Placement: Dr. Riccio will carefully plan the incision pattern based on the amount of excess skin and fat to be removed and its location. Common incision options include:

  • A traditional or full brachioplasty incision runs along the inside of the upper arm, from the elbow to the armpit.
  •
  • A limited incision may be made in the underarm area (axilla) for patients with less skin laxity.

3. Tissue Removal: Once the incisions are made, Dr. Riccio will remove excess skin and fat. In some cases, liposuction may also be used to contour the arm and remove additional fat.

4. Tightening and Redraping: After removing the excess tissue, the remaining skin is carefully redraped over the arm's contours to create a smoother and more toned appearance.

5. Closing Incisions: Dr. Riccio will close the incisions with sutures, which may be dissolvable or require removal in a follow-up appointment.

6. Drains and Dressings: Dr. Riccio does not generally place drains for this procedure, but this is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on each patient's individual situation.

7. Recovery: You will be closely monitored in a recovery area as the effects of anesthesia wear off. It's essential to have someone to drive you home and help with your initial recovery.

8. Postoperative Care: Dr. Riccio will provide specific postoperative instructions, including how to care for your incisions, manage discomfort, and reduce swelling. You may be required to wear a compression garment to support healing and reduce swelling.

9. Follow-Up: Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Riccio are crucial to monitor your progress, remove any drains, and address any concerns.

It's important to note that while brachioplasty effectively removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms, it does leave scars. The appearance of these scars can vary from person to person and may take several months to mature and fade.

The Mini-Arm Lift

In some instances, it may be possible to perform what is known as a "mini-arm lift," which is a less extensive procedure.  The incisions for a mini-arm lift are typically smaller and can be hidden under the arms, resulting in less visible scarring.  The recovery time for a mini-arm lift is generally shorter compared to a full brachioplasty.

Your Transformation Awaits

Brachioplasty results in improved arm contour and a more youthful appearance. However, it's essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet to ensure long-term results.  Please contact Dr. Riccio's team at Estetica Institute to book your consultation for a brachioplasty or mini-arm lift procedure.
